The new double tap gesture arrived on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 via watchOS 10.1 update, on Oct 26th, 2023. Without touching the touchscreen, you now can interact with the Apple watch using your fingers. The double tap gesture would allow you to scroll the widgets, skip music, answer phone and so on. The new feature is powered by the latest S9 chip with 4 neural engine for machine learning, with power algorithm to reduce background noising signal and extract only the gesture signal. The algorithm is robust for variety of hand, finger, wrist sizes, and was trained using data collected from the wrist using gyroscope, accelerometer and optical sensor of the watch. The future would make other gestures (e.g., single tap, triple tap) detection accurate and reliable to be deployed on the watch.
